Arthur C. Smith, Fine Artist, Photographer and Educator Passes Away at 86

My father, Arthur (Art) C. Smith passed away peacefully in early December, 2011.

For the multitude of our family’s dear friends who are discovering about my dad’s passing for the first time as they read this,  I apologize for my delay relaying the news.  Our family wanted to make sure the memorial service held earlier this month was a quiet and personal family event.   The additional time gave me time to gather my thoughts and emotions, and present this article to you now.

My Step-Mom, Jan called me late one night to tell me dad had a stroke and I immediately flew back to Philadelphia.  I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to be present for my dad’s return to consciousness for 2-days, eating and giving me a squeeze when I told him I loved him.

Daddy died peacefully in his sleep about 5-days later.  Unfortunately, I was not able to return to Philadelphia for the beautiful memorial service on December 17, 2011 that Jan, my sister Lisa, Pam and Peter and Marcella put together for daddy.

However, as the media-mogul daughter that I am, I shot this video, which Peter graciously included in the video that showed throughout the service.  So, thank you to all of you for making sure I was “present”…

In the wake of Dad’s passing, I have been reunited with many of my family members who I hadn’t seen or spoken with in many years.  The link below goes to my cousin Kamau Smith’s photo album on Facebook containing photos from the memorial service.   (I had not spoken with him for more than 15-years!)

The gentlemen in blue jackets are Dad’s fellow Tuskegee Airmen who graciously came to honor Dad in style.

Here is a far too brief overview of Art Smith’s life and accomplishments.

Art Smith attended Overbrook High School http://overbrookalumniassoc.org/ in Philadelphia, PA and was a member of the acclaimed Tuskegee Airmen.

He held a B.A. degree from Temple University and an M.A. in Fine Art from  Temple’s Tyler School of Art.

My sister Lisa and I followed in dad’s academic footsteps.  Me, with an M.A. in Media Studies and my sister Lisa, with an M.A. in Cross Cultural Education.

Dad taught at Fitz Simons Jr. High School in Philadelphia, where he was chair of the Arts Dept. for many years.   In 1968, Art accepted a position at Cheyney University.

He was greatly loved by his students at Cheyney and many of his students became lifelong friends, like Pam Gracy and Michael Bailey.

While there, he became the Director of the Educational Media Program and sponsor of the yearbook and the sponsor of the original models which groomed the students for the Miss Pennsylvania competition during his tenure at Cheyney.  Also he became the sponsor of the Cheyney University Video and Television Studios.

In 1988, Art retired from Cheyney after 20 years of dedicated service.  At age 9- Art won an art competition, and this motivated his interest in photography and art.  He was recognized as one of the most dynamic and creative artists of his time.

After retiring he became a docent at the African American Museum of Philadelphia.

He also donated photography and typography collections to the museum.  He was interested in history in general, and in the African American History in particular.

Dad was a member of the 1929 branch of the Association for the Study of African Life and History .  He was also the official photographer. photographer of Lewis Redding’s political campaign.

Long before the term, “thinking-out-of-the-box” was coined, Art thought out of the box.   His ideas and concepts were always a challenge to his family and friends.  Dad was sure to keep us laughing and on out toes one of his provocative jokes!

Art Smith’s intelligent wit always made you think.  Art was a familiar figure in the Germantown and Mt. Airy community.  He was the coordinator of Mt. Airy day for 2-years.  He was often seen riding his bike through the community and knew just about everyone.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Arthur C. Smith’s name to:
The Tuskegee Airman Scholarship Foundation
Greater Philadelphia Chapter

Arthur C. Smith  leaves behind a multi-generational legacy of fine artists, photographers, writers, and teachers. I could not be more proud to be my Daddy’s daughter.

There is nothing more primal than taking care of your child. Education is the key to long-term self-sufficiency. This film examines the quest to care for a child through the lens of that year, the year of searching for the best educational experience for your child.

The Kindergarten Shuffle is not only an intriguing cinematic story that is surprising realistic and sure to stir up memories for parents who’ve gone through the process.   It is an invaluable learning tool for anyone embarking upon the NY City Kindergarten Admissions process.

If the weather’s warm enough, the film will be shown on a large screen outside, in a private backyard.  Otherwise, we’ll be viewing it inside the salon area of their home.

Doug was my professor at The New School where I attended graduate school.   He teaches Script Analysis and Screenwriting, and I’m thrilled to have been bought in to work with this extraordiany project.

Legal Marketers – Director Tigre Hill’s Anti-MOVE movie “Barrel of a Gun” in Philly Magazine

The last post I wrote about my friend, Philadelphia filmmaker Tigre Hill’s feature documentary “Barrel of a Gun” received some terrific feedback from my legal marketing audience.  I’m thrilled to find the Karasma Media Legal Marketing Blog readers find his work as intriguing as I do!

His most recent coverage comes from  Philadelphia Magazine writer, Don Steinberg in the article,

The Gospel According to Tigre

The film’s take on the matter is that Mumia is guilty as charged — and convicted — in the 1981 killing of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. Hill released an incendiary three-minute trailer for Barrel in September, and the global outrage arrived on cue. Abu-Jamal supporters began labeling it an “anti-Mumia lynch-mob movie” and Hill an Uncle Tom. Protest-tourists from around the world started printing up signs to wave at the film’s premiere, which may be in Philadelphia, maybe this month or next, at least according to the last time Hill pushed back the timetable.

Using Keywords to Communicate With Your Legal Marketing Audience

One of the initial activities I do in the  Jump-start Your Social Media Workshop is work with a firm on how to choose the  keywords they’ll be using to connect with their potential clients.

Using social media provides you with insight into the minds of your ideal clients and customers.  Tasha Coleman of Upward Action provides some incredibly powerful information throughout her site, but particularly in this post on Keyword Usage.

Her top three points:

  1. Invest time conducting keyword research (or hire an agency like UpwardAction®) to get clear about exactly what your target market is searching for online as related to your industry and practice areas.
  2. Utilize this information to develop a list of about 15 power keywords.
  3. Use your power keywords to create GoogleAlerts and TweepBeeps to monitor online conversations that include your top 15 keywords.

Small to Mid-size Legal Marketing Firms – Your Online Video Is Allowed to Express Your Individuality

Whenever I include an article in my online newsletter with “Video” in the title, it receives more opens than any of the others.  The same holds true for the articles on this blog, reflecting marketing statistics on video inclusion, across the board.

That being said, here’s my introductory video:

The director, Michael Bailey of Morning Glory Films, is a lifelong friend with a production studio in Washington, D.C.  I admit, when he first suggested shooting me with green screen and rock music on the 2nd track, I wasn’t so sure…

My point is, If you craving to differentiate yourself as not “just another legal organization” then don’t be trepidacious about doing so.

My video’s finished product is slightly “out-of-the-box” from what you normally see in the world of legal service marketing.  Like it or not, it is something different  that’s available for you and you’ve kept reading to this point, and engagement is the first part of conversion!

graphic

My goal is to keep stimulating your creative ideas for your  legal marketing online platforms, while encouraging you to participate in my “Jump Start” sessions.  Hopefully, I’ll accomplish both of those things.

On another note, in case you’re wondering, yes, I used stock footage.

It’s not as if many of you aren’t  going to notice!  So, I may as well just say it…
Let’s be honest — it keeps  costs down and time expense to a minimum and since I’m admitting to it , it is kind of funny, yes?

There’s much more online video to come from Karasma Media.  Please feel free to call if you have any questions about how I can assist you with implementing your social media  to generate new business.

Holy Kaw! Is Right – Lady GaGa & Beyonce Make Legal & Social Commentary

Thanks to Guy Kawasaki’s blogpost on Holy Kaw Lady Gaga’s , “Telephone” video was bought to my attention.  It is a masterpiece of cinematography, costuming, and esoteric socially conscious storytelling that is sure to leave you thinking.  It must be for me to want to include on a blog directed toward legal marketers.

Not that I’m condoning breaking any laws, far from it.  Kudos to Ms. GaGa and Ms. Beyonce for taking a lead…  I do have a concern though.  There are a lot of folks whose cognitive skills aren’t “up to par”, and could take these messages too literally…

Sigh —  How and where are the artists supposed to draw the line — or are they?

I don’t usually post on the weekends,  but from now on when I do,  the articles will be a bit off the “beaten track” — even more so than they usually are…

Legal Marketers Can Step Out of the Box With Video

My assistant, Lori, sent me a very funny link to a law firm’s commercial on YouTube. (You’ve got to love when you find people to work with whose personalities and quirky sense of humor are in-sync with your own!)

One aspect of marketing I work with my lawyers on when developing their brands is to step outside the mold of traditional legal marketing and be truly representational of their personalities.

NY based Trolman, Glaser & Lichtman took a chance with their agency, The Levinson Tractenberg Group , and created a big viral win.
