How to Be the King (or Queen) of Social Media At Your Firm

If you’re the one person at your firm who’s even remotely familiar with the power of social media; my heart goes out to you. Believe me, I know it’s not easy being a catalyst on the cutting edge of technology, among a population who’s resisting technological upgrades.

Since so few people in the business world truly understand social media, it makes sense that lawyers, who are notoriously known for being slow to adapt to new technology, are a bit behind the 8-ball here too.

Steps to being the social media monarch of your firm:

1. Operate within the rules

The worst thing you can do to illustrate the value of social media to your company is violate your company’s policy by being it’s representative on Facebook. A better thing to do is start a conversation about it with the communications team and let them orchestrate it, even if they do in wrong. You can always offer them suggestions, which maintains your integrity and ensures that your firm’s Social Media Champ, will still be working there.

2. Target The Right Co-Workers

Since social media is a communications mechanism, make sure your firm’s public relations department or agency knows what it’s all about. A sure way to catch every CEOs heart (or at least capture attention) is through his or her secretary. Show the administrative assistant how to search for company mentions and print them off for the boss and you’ll find yourself getting recommendations from the most influential person in the C-Suite!

3. Use Social Media Tools to Solve Business Problems

Nothing convinces skeptics like a strong display of evidence. If you have a client in another city, why not suggest expanding your weekly conference calls to a video conference that features text.?

Live Lawyer, video conferencing system with SSL, essentially a web-based, high level, encrypted security is available no matter where the point of access is. Lawyers and clients can conduct secure, online audio/video conferences from anywhere there is an internet connection.

Worrying about how blogging will provide outreach to clients, potential clients, and securely ?

LexBlog hosts over 500 blogs and works with over 1,500 blog authors. Insult comments have never been an issue. Plus all comments are moderated. Comments don’t get live unless you approve them.

Let’s say one of your firm’s managers has an idea, and is unsure of it’s feasibility.

Twitter it and ask you followers in as specific or generic terms as need be, then show the manager the responses. (This is assuming you’ve designed your Twitter to connect you effectively.) Or, if you have a nice network built up in social media, take the next piece of news or interest on the company’s website and ask your friends to give you some feedback on it. You can A) Provide management with the feeback and B) Ask the web guys to tell you how many people visited the page from Twitter or LinkedIn or wherever you posted the link.

Having internal communications and work flow problems?

Show the project manager Basecamp . The platform has an SSL- Secure Socket Layer, so data sent between Basecamp and your firm’s computers is safely encrypted from prying eyes.

Twitter is terrific . It is the leading traffic generators to my blog. It’s been an excellent way for me to get to know other professionals, bloggers, conference coordinators, reporters, and referral sources.
