MOVE — A Legal, Political and Emotional Turmoil In Philadelphia’s History Revisited

Philadelphia is my hometown. Over the years, I’ve had many experiences that I can attribute to generating my interest in our country’s legal structure.  However, few of them are as poignant as the hostility that was smoldering in the mid-eighties between the city and the radical, fundamentalist group MOVE.

I was 22-years old in May, 1985 when the unrest came to a catastrophic head , and then Mayor,  Wilson Goode, ordered a detonation devise dropped on a neighborhood. The result was the death of 11 people — 5 of them children, and more than 61 families lost their homes that day.

Philadelphia Magazine featured a captivating oral history of the events that lead to that day, what happened the day of and the tumultuous legal and emotional aftermath that continues to this day.

Quoted throughout the article are comments by my friend, Philadelphia filmmaker  Tigre Hill. Tigre’s film,  “The Barrel of a Gun”, tells the story of the convicted murderer Mumia Abu-Jamal, an active member of MOVE and journalist, and his killing of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner, in 1981.

Over the years, Mumia, has been extremely vocal, and garnered huge support around his innocence and the conspiracy he alleges is behind his conviction.  Mumia’s version aaround this controversial story have become well known.

Hill’s film is from a perspective we have not been privy to previously.  This documentary includes the viewpoint of the journalists covering the story, political figures, and Officer Faulkner’s widow, Maureen.
